This is a velvet sukajan jacket from TAILOR TOYO, the original souvenir jacket brand.
Crafted from velvet, this brand new sukajan boasts a vintage-like texture.
Nicknamed the "Alaskajan," it's inspired by Alaska.
While its famous lightning bolt and polar bear pattern is a reproduction of a real vintage design, this drift ice and polar bear pattern is also a recreation of an actual vintage one.
Even among the already rare Alaska jackets, this one is incredibly rare.
Also depicted are the aurora borealis, a sight only seen in this frigid region.
The sleeve also features a popular dog sled embroidery.
The reversible side features a map of Alaska.
The blue "ALASKA" lettering creates a unique color combination with the orange body.
This jacket was commissioned by the U.S. military in the late 1950s and produced by Kosho, and displayed in the PX at the U.S. military base in Alaska. At the time, artisans designed the designs based on photographs and postcards of Alaska.
As a representative Japanese item, it exquisitely recreates both the oriental style and a vintage feel.
The embroidery is machine embroidery that is very close to hand embroidery. The artisan's careful adjustments make it hard to believe it was done by machine, resulting in a texture so close to hand embroidery.
