The "Jungle Fatigue" uniform—adopted and issued for tropical combat during the Vietnam War—underwent a design change regarding its buttons; much like the jacket, the trousers transitioned from the exposed buttons found on the First Model to the concealed buttons seen on the Second Model and beyond. As combat in Vietnam largely took place in dense jungle environments, exposed buttons frequently snagged on branches or gear; consequently, the Second Model was improved with a concealed button design where the buttons were tucked away beneath the pocket flaps. Additionally, the internal straps used to secure the contents of the cargo pockets were eliminated, the waist adjustment tabs were switched from a button closure to a metal buckle system, and the material was updated to ripstop fabric. Because the First Model was in service for only a brief period, surviving examples are extremely rare and highly sought after.
