This sweatshirt from Buzz Rickson’s utilizes a heavy, fleece-lined fabric constructed using a "horizontal" (reverse-grain) knitting technique.
Standard sweatshirts and hoodies tend to shrink vertically after repeated washing. To address this, the fabric is oriented horizontally—a method known as "horizontal knitting."
In this construction, the body fabric is turned sideways, with ribbed panels inserted at the sides. The term "horizontal" refers to this lateral orientation.
This design not only prevents vertical shrinkage but also accounts for elasticity in both the vertical and horizontal directions.
The shoulder area is seamless, ensuring a smooth, stress-free fit; however, the production process is complex, requiring large, continuous cuts of fabric and precise shaping around the neckline. The V-shaped gusset at the front is created by cutting a V-shaped opening and inserting a separate panel.
Items featuring this type of construction combined with military-themed graphics are highly rare, commanding high prices in the vintage market.
This particular design is based on a sweatshirt worn by the Coast Guard during training.
It features a slimmer silhouette with narrower armholes and a slightly trimmer body width.
While it carries a military-inspired print, it pairs exceptionally well not only with other military-style pieces but also with a wide range of American casual (Amekaji) apparel.

The fit is somewhat roomy. It fits perfectly in a size M when worn over a T-shirt. (You can also opt for a size S for a more fitted look.)
