[BUZZ RICKSON'S "BR80586" Type G-1 “A. PRITZKER & SONS, INC.”]
Spec 55-J-14, adopted by the Naval Aviation Bureau from the late 1940s, was the first jacket to be called "G-1".
55-J-14 was contracted 11 times between 1948 and 1951.
The design that started with M-422 is a series of jackets that have been standardized through the land and sea joint AN6552 and AN-J-3A, and their appearance and details have basically not changed significantly.
This confirms the high level of perfection of the design and details adopted from the beginning.
In addition, among flight jackets that are now made of synthetic fibers, the G-1, which is still issued today, is the longest-lasting leather flight jacket, and at the same time represents the pride of the U.S. Navy.
This G-1 is a model manufactured by A.PRITZKER & SONS, which also manufactured and delivered the Air Force's B-15C around the same time in 1951.
There is no size notation on the main label, so you can insert a size ticket into it.
Leather tanned with full vegetable tanning tends to be hard, but goatskin, which has flexible fibers, solves this problem.
The Type G-1 flight jacket is a signature U.S. Navy leather jacket introduced in 1950; it traces its lineage back to the M-422, which was developed in 1940 as a counterpart to the Army's Type A-2.
Having undergone several minor revisions, the "55-J-14" model is notable for being the first to officially bear the "G-1" designation.
A source of pride for the Navy, this jacket has remained in service for over half a century; it is a popular model that also cemented its status as a fashion staple after being featured in a famous movie released in the 1980s.
The mouton-lined collar features a chin strap, allowing it to be raised for enhanced protection against the cold.
The underside of the collar bears a "USN" stencil, a characteristic feature of early G-1 models.
The cuffs and hem feature double-layered knit ribbing that utilizes a combination of low-gauge and high-gauge knits.
This design not only improves the fit but also helps block out cold air.
The front features a zipper closure backed by an internal storm flap to prevent wind penetration.
The zipper pull is made of leather, making it easy to operate even while wearing gloves.
An internal pocket is located on the left side of the body; it offers slightly more capacity than the external flap pockets and is conveniently sized for storing small items.
The jacket features a three-dimensional design with action pleats on the back and a two-panel sleeve attachment, ensuring smooth movement around the shoulders.
Ventilation holes under the arms allow trapped heat to escape.
