Aero Leather, which began producing the A-2 in the late 1930s, holds the record among A-2 contractors for the highest number of delivery contracts—seven in total.
This achievement attests to their status as a premier manufacturer, possessing both proven technical expertise and the production capacity to ensure a stable supply.
This particular A-2 represents the fifth production lot manufactured by Aero Leather in 1941.
While the four preceding models featured a stand collar, this model marked the shift to a design without one.
Because the left and right front panels share the same pattern, the pocket positions were shifted horizontally to maintain visual balance when viewed from the front.
Observing the spacing between the side seams and the pockets reveals that the pockets are positioned differently on the left and right sides.
Distinctive features of this A-2 include pockets with a tighter bottom curve—giving them a nearly rectangular shape—and narrow stitching on the wind flap, which creates a sharp, rugged appearance.
It utilizes "ring stud" style snap buttons; since the top parts lack a rounded cap, wear and abrasion create a distinctive "donut-shaped" fade pattern over time.
Aero Leather was the only one of the 18 contractors—across a total of 39 production lots—to produce an A-2 featuring red rib-knit trim; the beautiful contrast between the dark seal brown body and the red ribbing has become a signature look for the company.
The "Type A-2" is a summer-weight flight jacket that was officially adopted by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1931.
This particular item is a reproduction of the 1941 Aero Leather model.
Since its debut in 2024, it has stood as a flagship model in the lineup, celebrated for the striking contrast between its deep dark brown leather and red ribbing.
The Italian horsehide is vegetable-tanned; raw hides are soaked in vats containing tannins extracted from tree bark and are slowly tanned while the concentration of the solution is gradually adjusted.
The base leather is dyed a color close to the natural tannin solution, while the surface features a "Seal Brown" pigment finish.
Unlike aniline finishes—which develop a sheen through friction—pigment finishes age by gradually wearing away the paint layer, creating a distressed look reminiscent of vintage A-2 jackets.
A-2 enthusiasts remain captivated by the signature Aero Leather design, featuring a simple collar (without a collar stand) and distinctive red ribbing.
By unhooking the collar and training it to set properly, you can achieve a clean, open-neck look.
Thanks to the symmetrical body panels that center the zipper and the brand's characteristic boxy, uncomplicated silhouette, this jacket is significantly more comfortable to wear than the Rough Wear model.
