The AN-J-3A and AN6552 were developed as successors to the M-422A, which had been used by the U.S. Navy.
Initially intended for joint use with the Army Air Forces, the underside of the collar bears the marking "US."
In reality, however, adoption was largely limited to the Navy; the Army Air Forces opted instead for the B-10, an intermediate-weight flight jacket made of cotton.
This specific AN-J-3A was supplied in 1946 by Willis & Geiger—a company that had previously delivered the M-422 series on four separate occasions. Renowned for both technical expertise and consistent production quality, Willis & Geiger went on to supply the AN-J-3A series three times.
While G-1 pocket flaps typically feature an upper flap with a folded edge sewn to a lower flap, this model is distinguished by a lower flap that is sewn with a raw, cut edge.
The G-1 lineage represents a long history of iconic Navy jackets, and the G-1 remains in active service today.
Although goatskin is the standard material for the G-1, this particular lot is exceptionally rare, as it is the only version in the jacket's long history to utilize horsehide.
