This A-2, bearing contract number AC18091, comes from the second production lot by Rough Wear—a company that supplied the military with A-2 jackets on five separate occasions.
It features the company's signature pattern design, including a stand collar and a unique construction where a symmetrical body pattern—originally not designed for a front placket—was adapted to incorporate one.
This specific version is a "no-stencil" type, meaning it lacks the Air Force insignia typically found on the shoulder.
While military regulations of the time specified horsehide for A-2 jackets, this particular lot utilized goatskin—a rarity for the A-2—likely due to procurement circumstances.
Goatskin is often associated with the Navy's iconic G-1 leather jacket; however, because goatskin hides have a smaller surface area compared to horsehide, manufacturers were compelled to cut the leather into smaller pieces—much like with the G-1—to ensure efficient, waste-free usage.
When cutting goatskin for a pattern like the A-2, which requires a single large piece of leather for the back, the remaining scraps offer limited utility for other components.
In other words, this represents a highly luxurious use of the material.
The leather itself is a carefully selected, thick goatskin; it is vegetable-tanned and base-dyed, then layered with additional dyes—starting from lighter shades—to create a natural, nuanced color variation.
For the final finish, artisans meticulously rub in solid wax while applying heat to melt it into the leather.
This process allows the base color to show through when viewed in sunlight, resulting in a rich, deep hue.
