This is a black leather version of a denim blouse—a style that emerged during the material rationing era of World War II. It retains the original design’s key features: four front buttons, a single pocket (without a flap), and a back cinch. The back panel follows a "split-T" construction, with a center seam regardless of the garment size. The exterior is crafted from the same horsehide used for the black A-2 jacket, while the lining features a smooth rayon twill, ensuring exceptional comfort and ease of wear. The horsehide is vegetable-tanned, meaning the core of the leather remains brown; as the black surface wears away through use, it develops a rich, nuanced patina.

The "Black MA-1" was first produced by Buzz Rickson’s to mark the brand’s 10th anniversary. In the novel *Pattern Recognition* by the world-renowned author William Gibson, the protagonist is described wearing a "Buzz Rickson’s Black MA-1." This reference served as the inspiration for the creation of an actual Buzz Rickson’s Black MA-1. While the standard, officially adopted color for the U.S. Air Force’s MA-1 flight jacket—introduced in the 1950s—is sage green, a truly authentic, military-specification black version (utilizing genuine mil-spec parts and materials) had never existed before. Consequently, it garnered significant attention and acclaim from enthusiasts who value historical authenticity. Even when all materials are specified to be black, they take the dye differently depending on the base material; when assembled into a single jacket, these subtle variations in shade emerge, revealing just how many different types of materials go into the construction of a flight jacket.
