Champion's "Reverse Weave" was developed in 1934, with the manufacturing method patented in 1938.
The "Reverse Weave" method was devised by Sam Friedland—a salesman with prior experience as a cutter at the venerable American men's clothier Hickey Freeman—after customers complained about shrinkage caused by washing; he developed the technique through a process of trial and error to solve this issue.
By using the fabric horizontally rather than the standard vertical orientation, he successfully minimized shrinkage.
This item is a reproduction of the "Reverse Weave" model that received its second patent in 1952; it is a pullover "after-hooded" sweatshirt—commonly known as a "post-attached hoodie"—featuring a hood sewn into the ribbed collar section.
It faithfully replicates period-accurate details, such as the "Tataki Tag" (stitched down at both ends) and the specific placement of the stitching inside the hood.
The neck label, displaying the patent numbers for both "Reverse Weave" and "Expansion Gusset," has also been faithfully recreated.
Furthermore, it retains the original specification of omitting the "C" logo patch from the left sleeve.
The fabric is a thick, brushed-fleece sweatshirt material.
It utilizes an extra-heavyweight terry fleece designed to replicate the sweatshirt fabrics of that era.
