Champion’s "Reverse Weave" was developed in 1934, with its manufacturing method patented in 1938.
The "Reverse Weave" technique was devised by Sam Friedland—a salesperson with prior experience as a cutter at the venerable American menswear retailer Hickey Freeman—after customers complained about shrinkage caused by washing; he developed the method through a process of trial and error to solve this issue.
By using the fabric horizontally rather than in the standard vertical orientation, the design successfully minimized shrinkage.
From the late 1960s, U.S. fire safety regulations deemed 100% cotton fleece-lined materials hazardous, leading to the incorporation of polyester, acrylic, and rayon into the fabric composition.
This product is a crewneck sweatshirt from a series that faithfully reproduces the acrylic-blend "Reverse Weave" style used in the late 1970s.
The original blend ratios have been accurately recreated: the Navy version consists of 90% cotton and 10% acrylic. For the Silver Gray version, rayon was added to achieve a heathered look, resulting in a composition of 82% cotton, 12% acrylic, and 6% rayon.
Knitted on vintage sinker knitting machines, the fabric is characterized by a distinctive voluminous feel and texture, offering a substantial, heavyweight feel with a warm, fleece-lined interior.
The print design is based on an official Ivy League college license, featuring "YALE" applied via a penetrating dye print technique.
It also retains the specifications of the era by omitting the "C" logo patch typically found on the left sleeve.
