Champion's "Reverse Weave" was developed in 1934, with the manufacturing method patented in 1938.
The "Reverse Weave" method was devised by Sam Friedland—a salesperson with prior experience as a cutter at the venerable American men's clothier Hickey Freeman—after customers complained about shrinkage caused by washing; he developed the technique through a process of trial and error to solve this issue.
By using the fabric horizontally rather than in the standard vertical orientation, the method successfully minimized shrinkage.
From the late 1960s, 100% cotton fleece-lined fabric was deemed a fire hazard under US fire safety regulations, leading to the incorporation of polyester, acrylic, and rayon into the material.
This product is a hooded sweatshirt from a series that reproduces the acrylic-blend "Reverse Weave" style used in the late 1970s.
The material blend faithfully replicates the original specifications: colors other than Silver Gray are composed of 90% cotton and 10% acrylic.
For the Silver Gray version, rayon is added to create a heathered look, resulting in a blend of 82% cotton, 12% acrylic, and 6% rayon.
It is characterized by a distinctive volume and texture achieved through knitting on vintage sinker knitting machines.
The printed designs are based on official Ivy League college licensing and come in two varieties: "YALE" (Yale University) featuring a penetrating dye print, and "MICHIGAN STATE" (Michigan State University) featuring a rubber print.
The "MICHIGAN STATE" design utilizes the typeface from that era.
It also retains the original specification of omitting the "C" logo patch from the left sleeve.
