1874-2024 Celebrating 150 Years GREENEBAUM BROTHERS
It was 150 years ago, on May 20, 1873, that Levi Strauss & Co. obtained a patent for "a method of using metal rivets to reinforce pockets on clothing."
A year later, on August 25, 1874, Greenebaum Brothers, also based in San Francisco, obtained a patent for reinforcing stress points with leather.
Until the rivet patent expired in the 1890s, Greenebaum Brothers' pants were supplied as durable workwear from the West to the Midwest, where mineral resource mining was booming. Greenebaum Brothers will celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2024. They will create their original design, "Leatherbound Overalls," created in the 19th century, by recreating their original "Two by One Denim," which stands out from the rest.
Denim
The denim is a light-ounce twill (2/1 twill: twill weave with two warp threads and one weft thread) with a thin count used for the weft, which was rare for this era.
The original is about 7.5 x 16, but the color fade shows that the warp threads are stronger.
This denim may have been imported from France as a European fabric for New York, which was popular at the time.
Silhouette
The thighs are not extremely thick and have a neat straight cut.
The rise is slightly deep, making it very easy to wear and straight without any quirks.
The fit around the waist and the line that does not narrow at the knees make the hem width appropriate for both sneakers and boots.
Details
The rivets are reinforced with leather, which was patented in 1874, and the front pockets do not have a coin pocket.
The three-dimensional L-shape is also clearly an original specification. Greenebaum was also an importer and had a base in New York.
The use of leather reinforcement was likely heavily influenced by the 1873 patent for rivets.
It is easy to imagine that consumers would have used this stress point as a point of comparison when purchasing, so various measures were taken in this area, including the use of thread rivets. Regardless of the condition of the existing archives, most of the leather reinforcement is not damaged in this area, so its strength is considered to be reliable.

The color fades more vertically.
