[STUDIO D'ARTISAN "D1949" 16oz WW2 Jeans]
In the early 1940s, amidst World War II, the United States needed to concentrate its national resources on the war effort.
As part of this initiative, the War Production Board implemented strict regulations on the manufacture of civilian consumer goods, including clothing.
Materials such as cotton and metal components (rivets, buttons, etc.) were prioritized for military use, significantly impacting workwear, including jeans.
Under the Board's directives, details deemed non-essential or luxurious were ruthlessly eliminated; specifications were altered to include simplified rivets, the removal of rivets from watch pockets, and the replacement of traditional "arcuate" stitching with printed designs.
Consequently, the construction of jeans was drastically simplified to meet wartime standards, resulting in a rugged, purely utilitarian aesthetic.
Furthermore, with many skilled sewing machine operators mobilized for wartime production, it became common for less experienced workers to handle the assembly of jeans.
This often led to rough workmanship—such as uneven stitching or misalignment—yet because even re-sewing was restricted, these imperfect garments were shipped as finished products.
Drawing on this wartime context, D'Artisan meticulously reproduces the era's raw, utilitarian sewing specifications and simplified design details.
Denim
The denim is 16oz selvedge specially prepared for these jeans.
Skillfully reproduces the dull indigo blue color reminiscent of oxidation unique to this era and the rough texture unique to that time.
The denim is finished with a beautiful color fading with strong shading.
Silhouette
The silhouette is the "101" regular straight fit.
It is the most fundamental straight-leg model offered by D'Artisan.
With a slightly higher rise and a roomy fit—reminiscent of the classic "XX" style—it is a versatile straight-leg cut that suits anyone and pairs well with any style.
Details
Features a leather patch, herringbone pocket bags, and yellow stitching.
It faithfully reproduces the intentionally irregular stitching and structural "imperfections" characteristic of that era.
Iron laurel-leaf buttons are used on the front, allowing natural rust to develop over time.
