[SUN SURF "SS39618" S/S Rayon Hawaiian Shirt “ANCIENT CAPITAL”]
This shirt is a reproduction of a 1950s Hawaiian shirt, inspired by vintage KILOHANA designs.
The material is rayon crepe, with a unique shallow, soft texture that feels different to wear than filament rayon.
The oriental design features the beautiful vermilion shrine of Heian Jingu in Kyoto as its main motif.
Adding to this are elements frequently seen on Japanese-designed Aloha shirts, such as the Togetsukyo Bridge and the view of Arashiyama from the bridge.
The silhouettes of cherry blossoms and trees are depicted on solid areas, creating a narrative throughout the shirt by using the negative space of the pattern.
The use of color is also interesting; for example, the yellow on the background is not lemon yellow, but a golden yellow color often used in prints on traditional Japanese clothing.
