The two-tone navy and off-white velveteen body features an looming white dragon, its long body peeking out from between the clouds.
As with vintage pieces from the mid-1950s, the dragon's face and the outline of its scales are rendered in gray thread, emphasizing the three-dimensionality of the horizontal embroidery.
The white ribbing is lined with navy and red, evoking the color scheme of the American flag.
The red and white piping on the sleeves adds an accent.
The reversible side features an image of a moderately deformed eagle gliding over the sea with Mount Fuji in the background.
This luxurious piece features the three main motifs of a sukajan jacket: a dragon and tiger on the chest and an eagle on the back.
The black and off-white body is balanced with red ribbing.
VELVETEEN (TWO-TONE) SOUVENIR JACKET This souvenir jacket is made from two-tone velveteen fabric, with a two-tone design on the body and under the sleeves.
While it does exist as a vintage piece, it is a rare model with only a few known to have been produced worldwide.
Unlike regular velveteen, all existing examples are unpadded.
The reversible side is made of satin fabric, but has no quilting stitching.
This is an extremely valuable and rare design.
As a representative Japanese item, it combines an oriental touch with an exquisite vintage feel.
The embroidery is machine-made to a very close resemblance to hand embroidery. The artisan's precise adjustments result in an embroidery that is so close to the texture of hand embroidery that it's hard to believe it was done by machine.
