WAREHOUSE flannel shirts are made using power looms, which only remain in limited areas of Japan.
The reason we use power looms to make flannel isn't simply to create flannel fabric with selvedge edges; selvedge is merely a by-product.
The purpose is that using a power loom allows us to finish the fabric without losing the texture of the uneven yarn.
Just like denim, the yarn used to weave vintage flannel shirts was uneven at the time. If we wove that yarn under high tension on a modern loom, the result would be a different fabric. The original properties of the yarn would be lost.
By weaving on an old-fashioned power loom, we are able to weave the fabric without losing the original unevenness of the yarn.
The power looms used to weave flannel shirts are twill looms, just like denim. Because flannel shirts need to be patterned, they are designed to weave multi-colored yarns. The warp threads move up and down in a complex pattern, while shuttles carrying different colored weft threads move back and forth between them, alternating between the two.
In this way, flannel is woven with the just the right amount of tension typical of a power loom, and the unevenness inherent in each thread is preserved.
The finished flannel fabric is brushed on the back, following the same method as back then.
Brushing gives the pattern a soft look. Further brushing creates volume in the fabric, elevating the unique feel of a power loom to an even softer texture.
In this way, flannel woven on a power loom has a texture that can only be achieved by reproducing the yarn itself.
The easiest way to tell is by the presence or absence of selvedge, and just like vintage flannel shirts from up until the 1960s, WAREHOUSE shirts use selvedge in the gusset.
The simple pattern matches a wide range of outfits.
This is one pattern you'll want to own.
