WPA SEWING ROOM One of the WPA's large-scale programs was the production of workwear for blue-collar workers.
It was made in sewing rooms called "sewing rooms," and clothing was affixed with a tag that read, "Made by W.P.A. Sewing Rooms, Not to Be Sold."
In each state that had a sewing room, seamstresses took great pride in their work and declared that the initials "W.P.A." stood for "We Patch Anything."
Sometimes, they repaired and adapted military clothing to create new garments, which were worn by WPA workers.
The designs and sewing specifications of WPA clothing are truly interesting.
The designs were based on military workwear, with many adaptations made.
As the name "SEWING ROOM" suggests, the sewing method is largely "lock stitching" rather than the "backstitching" that was common in workwear at the time.
It evokes the idyllic warmth of the time before World War II brought military demand to the factory.
